The 1997 ACADEMY AWARDS

The 69th.Academy Awards saw host Billy Crystal return at the top of his form, beginning with a clever opening involving David Letterman in an old plane....and as Crystal joked early on, it was "Sundance West," a night mostly of independent films.

And the winners are
BEST PICTURE: The English Patient
BEST ACTOR: Geoffrey Rush for Shine
BEST ACTRESS: Frances McDormand for Fargo
BEST DIRECTOR: Anthony Minghella for The English Patient
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Cuba Gooding Jr. for Jerry Maguire

From Madison Square Garden, New York, for the first time--with twice the live audience, the 1997 Grammy Awards gave top honors to a diverse group of recording artists, ranging from Hilary Rodham Clinton (for Spoken Word) to Eric Clapton.

Eric Clapton won both Best Recording and Album of the Year honors for his Change the World. Tony Bennett was honored for Best Pop Album. Babyface was honored as Producer of the Year. Sheryl Crow took top Rock Artist honors.
